Typically a Jackson-Pratt (JP) drain is removed when the surgical site's drainage is less than 25 milliliters (mL) per day for two consecutive days. However, some recommend removing the drain after three weeks, or as early as seven days after surgery, even if drainage is more than 30 mL per day. The length of time a JP drain remains in place depends on the type of surgery and the amount of drainage.
